Over the past decade, online travel magazines have been popping up left and right, but some are more reputable than others. Below is a list of some of the best online travel magazines.
Brave New Traveler
Brave New Traveler is a daily travel magazine that provides thought-provoking and entertaining travel articles with an emphasis on philosophy, health, politics, and culture. Brave New Traveler is a part of the Matador Network, “the world’s largest independent travel magazine.” Brave New Traveler accepts submissions from new and experienced writers and pays $25 per article.
The Compass
In its own words, The Compass is an online travel magazine that focuses on “unique aspects of culture, adventure, arts and every day from around the world.” Articles tend to be about the lesser-known aspects of a destination. The Compass does not pay for submissions, but publishing here can help emerging writers gain publishing credits.
Galavanting
Galavanting is an online women’s travel magazine and community that publishes travel essays, socially-conscious travel articles, women-owned business profiles, eco-travel articles, and travel tips. Pay is $50 for travel essays and $15 for travel tips and blog entries.
GoNOMAD
GoNOMAD.com is more than just a webzine; it is a “comprehensive resource center” that provides detailed destination guides, a searchable database of tours and trip ideas, a forum where members can get travel advice, and much more. GoNOMAD articles focus on alternative, or participatory, travel, which they describe as going beyond sightseeing to fully engage with the people and culture of a destination. GoNOMAD pays $25 for features.
Go World Travel Magazine
Go World Travel Magazine‘s articles aren’t your average destination guides. Instead, they help readers experience a destination through its unique sights, sounds and smells. Feature categories include Fascinating People, Eco-Travel, Off-the-Beaten-Path, and It Really Happened. You’ll also find reviews of unique hotels or resorts or commentary on travel-related issues within the magazine’s different departments. Go World pays up to $50 for features and $35-$40 for department pieces.
Literary Traveler
Since its launch in 1998, Literary Traveler has published articles about writers and other creative artists and the places they lived or traveled. Literary Traveler also promotes literary tours, where you can literally walk in the footsteps of some of the world’s greatest wordsmiths. Literary Traveler does pay for submissions, but the payment amount is not listed within the writers’ guidelines.
Travel map
Travel mug has been operating for 10 years and prides itself on publishing riskier stories than you might find in most glossy travel magazines. Travelmag does not pay for stories, but it is a great place to start for those looking to break into the travel writing market. Travel mug is even listed as one of the top online travel magazines in Lonely Planet’s Travel Writing.
Vagabondish
Vagabondish‘s tagline reads “The Travelzine for Today’s Vagabond,” and its articles reflect this nomadic philosophy. Vagabondish does not pay for submissions, but writers can promote their own websites or blogs in their bios.
Wanderlust and Lipstick
Like Galavanting, Wanderlust and Lipstick is a travel magazine written by (but not necessarily for) women. Although they do not pay for submissions, all articles published on Wanderlust and Lipstick will be considered for an anthology of women’s travel stories to be published. Stories published in the book will receive a modest payment.
World Hum
World Hum is one of the largest online travel magazines, now powered by the Travel Channel. World Hum features travel stories, interviews, reviews of travel books, how-tos, photos, destination guides, and much more. Payment varies depending on the type of submission.
