Step one: Disconnect the spark plug

As a safety precaution, you should always disconnect the spark plug before fixing your lawn mower. This will prevent the engine from running. If possible, you should wear your gloves and protective eye glasses to prevent particles from hitting the eyes.

Step two: Pre diagnosis

Look at the spark plug before you disassemble the entire engine. This may give you a hint on what is happening in the engine. A meltdown of the spark plug may be caused due to lack of enough oil. And when the spark plug is striped you will need to buy a heli coli to patch the damage.

Step three: The ignition system

Check the magneto ignition system. There should be a small gap between the magnets in the flywheel and the magneto. Also, there should be two teeth on the starter so that it can turn the flywheel and when the brake is turned off the cord will rewind. In addition, the space between the flywheel and brake shouldn’t have a thickness wider than a playing card. For other ignition system types other than magneto, you should check the wiring, wear or grime that might bring issues to the engine.

Step four: Getting rid of the flywheel

Getting rid of the flywheel is a very challenging process. The nut that holds the flywheel is really tight and can simply be removed by blocking the rotation of the crank shaft with a wrench holding the nut on the blade. After removing the nut, you will require to gently pry off the flywheel with a crowbar. Keep it safe until you are done.

Step five: Cleaning the carburetor

The carburetor is one of the major causes of engine problems. It is a very crucial part of the 4 stroke engine. The important thing about the carburetor is that it should be kept extremely clean for it to functions well.

Step six: Fuel tank and lines

Another possibility for engine failure maybe a hole in the gas cap becoming clogged. To view this, simply lightly screw on the cap, and see if the engine starts. If you need, simply run a little gauge wire in the hole to clean it. But if the issue is in the gas tank filter, then you can be cleaned using a light brush.

Step seven: Intake and exhaust valves

Usually, there are two valves in the 4 stroke engine for intake and out take. At times, the valves get dirty, and need to be cleaned by a commercial valve cleaner or hand. But if they have a scratch or leak oil, you will need to buy new ones.

Step eight:  Spark arrestor

This is needed by law on all outdoor engines. It catches sparks that come out of the engine and prevents fire. Most of spark arrestors can be opened and cleaned using a wire brush.

Step nine: Getting rid of the piston

After carrying out the above steps and are still not able to start your engine, you can try removing the piston which is a very tricky things. You will be required to separate two halves of the engine to check if the piston has any issue. I don’t recommend this as you might end up damaging your engine.
